The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC) handles all septic permits in Caledonia County. Passumpsic, as part of the town of Barnet, follows standard VT DEC procedures. Properties near the Passumpsic River must meet enhanced setback requirements to protect the waterway.

Passumpsic homeowners should pump every 3 to 4 years. The Caledonia County location means harsh winters that slow bacterial decomposition. Properties in the river valley area should be especially diligent, as spring flooding can stress systems that are already near capacity.

Passumpsic's Passumpsic River floodplain creates high seasonal water tables that can saturate drain fields, especially during spring snowmelt. The river valley's alluvial soils, while generally well-draining, can have pockets of silt and clay that complicate system performance. Bank erosion near the river can also threaten system infrastructure.
