Septic installation involves designing and building a complete onsite wastewater treatment system for properties that are not connected to municipal sewer. This includes the septic tank, distribution box, and drain field (also called a leach field), along with all connecting pipes and components.
The installation process begins well before any digging. A licensed soil scientist or engineer conducts a percolation test (perc test) to evaluate how well your soil absorbs water. This test determines what type of system your property can support and how large the drain field must be. Your local health department then reviews the site plan and issues a septic permit before construction can begin.
There are several types of septic systems. A conventional gravity system is the simplest and least expensive, using gravity to move effluent from the tank to the drain field. Pressure-dosed systems use a pump to distribute effluent evenly across the drain field and are common where the terrain is flat or the soil drains slowly. Mound systems build an elevated drain field above the natural soil grade and are used where the water table is too high or bedrock is too close to the surface. Advanced treatment units (ATUs) use aerobic bacteria to produce a higher-quality effluent and are required in some states for properties near water bodies.
Installation costs vary significantly based on system type, soil conditions, property layout, and local regulations. A conventional gravity system typically costs $5,000 to $15,000, while engineered systems like mounds or ATUs can range from $15,000 to $30,000 or more. Permit fees, soil testing, and engineering add $1,000 to $3,000 to the total.
The installation itself usually takes 2 to 5 days of excavation and construction work. After installation, the health department inspects the system before it can be covered and put into use. Most states require the installer to hold a specific septic contractor license, so always verify credentials before hiring.
