Most Elizabeth City homeowners should pump their septic tank every 3 to 5 years, though clay soils mean drain field care is especially important. Larger households or homes with garbage disposals may need more frequent service.

The region's dense clay soils drain slowly, leading to drain field saturation during heavy rains. Root intrusion from hardwood trees is a year-round concern.
